Our Impact

ONFE has launched more than 40 education programs—becoming partners of choice for new, collaborative initiatives that enhance student learning and achievement. Here are some highlights of what we achieved in the past year (2009/10):

Student Support

  • 11,000 children in 148 schools began each school day with a nutritious breakfast
  • 1,670 volunteers dedicated some 160,320 hours of their time to 232 Ottawa schools. The value of this donated time is approximately $2.4 million.
  • 38 school-business partnerships engaged employer-supported volunteers to read to young children in local schools

Career Exploration

  • 240 high school students got an insider’s view of career opportunities in technology as part of the Ottawa High School Technology Mentor program
  • 360 employers registered to provide co-op placements and other work-related experiences for local high school students

Capacity Building and Educator Support

  • 75% increase in school-based substance-abuse counselling and other supports for students, parents and educators over three years
  • 1600 educators and community agency staff received in-service instruction in mental health as part of the Student Support Leadership Initiative
  • 460 people attended the ninth annual EduGala to recognize teaching excellence in the region; 452 nominations were received; 67 finalists, representing 10 educational institutions, were honoured at the event
  • 400 people attended the “Making Innovation Happen” conference, focused on creating a culture of innovation within the local education system.
